The Family of the Vurdalak and Wendigo?

11:01 Mar 14 2012
Times Read: 750

It appears that the episode 8 from the serie "Fear Itself" named Skin and Bones is based really close on the story of Aleksei Tolstoi.

The story is not about a vampire, however it is really close to one and somehow portrays a kind of undead that could successfully portray the monster-like figure of the vampire/strigoi/undead from before the English dandy of the XVIII-XIXth century literature.

Polish Carmilla movie

I recently discovered a movie made by a Polish studio during the communism era(or the Red Death era as I like to call it), more exactly in 1980.

I was always impressed by special effects using simple technical features but with a maximum of effect. This movie contains such things so I strongly recommend it.

Another good thing is the setting of the lights and the atmosphere from the cemetery scenes. I think it was filmed on a theatre stage and that thing makes me remember the TV movie Mahabharata made by Peter Brook.

Many of you (especially those who didn`t read or heard about Sheridan Le Fanu novel might find all the static scenes boring because they are not translated in English and remained in Polish) might find the static sequences boring. That`s why I will add here the best moments of the movie.

I have a few Polish persons on VR that will appreciate this posting though.

The moments I liked:

1:20 - 3:00

19:30 - 21:45

33:30 - 35:40

40:50 - 44:50

51:50 - 53:40

56:20 - 59:00

59:40 - end

Vampire Quote

"The figure turns half round, and the light falls upon its face. It is perfectly white — perfectly bloodless. The eyes look like polished tin; the lips are drawn back, and the principal feature next to those dreadful eyes is the teeth — the fearful looking teeth — projecting like those of some wild animal, hideously, glaringly white, and fang-like. It approaches the bed with a strange, gliding movement. It clashes together the long nails that literally appear to hang from the finger ends. No sound comes from its lips. Is she going mad — that young and beautiful girl exposed to so much terror? she has drawn up all her limbs; she cannot even now say help."

"The vampires have always been metaphors for me. They've always been vehicles through which I can express things I have felt very, very deeply."
